(What do you want students to know by the end of the lesson?)

Students will prepare posters to put on the wall in the Encore hallway displaying the different Career Clusters with the following included in each poster:

  • 5 Career Pathways on

each poster

  • Short job descriptions
  • Education (CTE Classes)

and Skills needed

  • Clubs that are available

that pertain to each Cluster

State Standards/Common Core State Standards (CCSS)/CTE Standards

(What state, grade level, and CTE standards does this lesson address?)

North Carolina Grade 8- CTE Standard- Understanding the 6 Functions of Business – (Marketing)

Resources and Technology

(What materials do you need for this lesson? What technology will you use for this lesson, such as computers or SmartBoards?)

Computers, Printer, Microsoft Office, NC Career Interest Profiler Survey, NC Career Clusters Guide, Poster board, Canvas (Class website), Magazines (business and industry)

Anticipatory Set and Prior Knowledge

(How are you going to focus students’ attention at the beginning of the lesson? How are you going to use information that students already know to form a foundation for introducing new concepts?)

Students will log onto class webpage when entering the room. On the daily announcement there will be a link to an interest profiler survey in which they will fill out.

https://www.nccareers.org/careerguide/assessment.html

This interest profiler will give them career clusters and pathways in which their results from the survey match.

Differentiated Instruction

(How are you going to differentiate the lesson for all learners, such as students with special needs, English language learners (ELLs), and gifted and talented learners?)

This will be a group exercise for students who share the same Career Pathways.  Students from different backgrounds are urged to use examples or interest that relate to their culture if they choose.  A co-teacher or myself will assist special needs students along the way with his project.

Learning Styles and Behavior

(How does your lesson address the needs of the visual, auditory, and tactile learner? How will you manage student behavior?)

Students will use the internet to get a visual of the objective which will stay on the smartboard and website with the instructions and a link to an example. After each student finishes the Interest Profiler survey I will go over the purpose and instructions in the lesson. Tactile learners will benefit from creating an Advertisement on poster board to be displayed throughout the school.

Model

(How are you going to model for students what you expect them to be able to do?)

I will display my results from my survey and how it used it to create a poster showcasing my chosen Career Cluster.  I will have created an example of the project on poster board to show as a reference.

Guided Practice

(How are students going to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson objectives?)

I will walk through each instruction and show how I incorporated it in my poster. Asking questions to engage career clusters different from the example.

Checking for Understanding

(What questions and activities will you use to determine whether students are ready to work on their own?)

Students will pair up with similar Career Clusters if possible in groups max 3 to group. Some students might work alone.  Students will click on a link to NC Career Cluster webpage.  They will complete the first step of providing 5 career pathways listed under their Career Cluster. They will print off headings for each Career Pathway in a Word Document. I will stand at printer and ask questions as groups come to retrieve their career pathways.

Ongoing Feedback

(How are you going to provide your students with ongoing feedback or assistance during the guided practice?)

I will walk around the classroom to each group to make sure they are following instructions correctly. Asking questions that pertain to their chosen pathway.

Formal and Informal Assessment

(How will you determine whether students have mastered the objectives?)

Students will follow a rubric in which they will have an adjacent group use to do a peer review on their poster once everyone is finished.  Groups will then correct or add content based upon the peer review.

Closure

(What opportunities will you provide for students to reflect on what they have learned?)

With 5 minutes to go in class and once groups are wrapping up I will ask each group to present their finding from their area.

Independent Practice

(What independent practice activities will you provide for students to practice what they have learned in class?)

Students will prepare posters to put on the wall in the Encore hallway displaying the different Career Clusters with the following included in each poster:

  • 5 Career Pathways on

each poster

  • Short job descriptions
  • Education (CTE Classes)

and Skills needed

  • Clubs that are available

that pertain to each Cluster

Magazine clippings will be used to provide graphics for each Career Cluster pathway.

Lesson Reflection

(What went well? What would you do differently next time?)

Some students had Career clusters that didn’t match up with others and felt different socially that they didn’t conform.  I put the same value on everyone’s Career Cluster choice.  I would have each student create a small poster of their own.
